Forestry Biosecurity at Fieldays

This year at Fieldays was the launch of the brand new Forestry Hub. Under the theme of ‘Wood – our low-carbon future’, the Fieldays Forestry Hub gave visitors the chance to explore the many facets of the forestry and wood processing sector and how the sector has a vital role in mitigating climate change.

Included in this was a stand on biosecurity, which is recognised as extremely important for the ongoing protection and health of NZ’s forests. As key providers of forest health surveillance, SPS staff member Lucy Aukett was on hand to promote the work of the SPS team, and the opportunities available for forest biosecurity training. For example, the free forest biosecurity eLearning available online here.

Visitors to the stand loved the insect display kindly provided by Scion. The display showed some of the exotic pests that good biosecurity is helping to prevent establishing in NZ, as well as many native species that are able to make their homes in forest plantations.

For forestry workers, we also have face to face biosecurity training coming soon. To register your interest or find out more, contact us at bugs@spsbiota.co.nz
