August is Biosecurity Awareness Month!

SPS Biota is proudly supporting the Biosecurity Business Pledge’s Awareness Month!

At SPS Biota, our team are proud to play our part in protects our business, New Zealand’s unique natural environment, our economy and way of life. From working in the Border Space with Transitional Facilities to operating in surveillance programmes looking for pests and diseases, working alongside Councils, Ministry for Primary Industries and other industry associations, biosecurity is a fundamental part of our business.

We are so passionate about biosecurity and believe that it is a team effort - no one organisation can do everything to protect our beautiful country - we all have a part to play!

As an island nation, New Zealand’s economy, environment and way of life are uniquely vulnerable to biosecurity threats. From invasive pests and diseases to emerging risks in global trade and travel, the challenge is constantly evolving.

Businesses play a critical role by strengthening supply chain vigilance, supporting staff awareness, and embedding biosecurity practices into everyday operations. Communities help by reporting unusual pests, diseases or environmental changes. Individuals contribute through simple actions such as cleaning equipment, checking goods before moving them, and staying alert to potential risks.

When we work together, we increase our ability to detect threats early, respond quickly, and minimise impacts before they become major economic or environmental challenges.

Biosecurity is one of New Zealand’s greatest competitive advantages. Protecting it requires partnership, shared responsibility and a commitment from all of us.

The Biosecurity Business Pledge is a membership organisation that supports and encourages businesses to play a proactive role in the biosecurity system.

There are a number of resources such as unwanted pest posters that are downloadable from the tools and templates section on the Pledge website. Take action today and help keep our nation free of unwanted pests and diseases.

If you do find an unusual insect at your business or in your home garden report it to the Biosecurity New Zealand hotline 0800 80 99 66.
